Research journey: chest-falsetto discontinuity and videokymography
Original language description
Author's successive research on the chest-falsetto transition is reviewed and related to the state of the art knowledge on biomechanics of vocal fold oscillation. Chest-falsetto register leaps are studied and shown to be related also to theproduction ofa complex, subharmonic vibratory pattern in the vocal folds. The process of development of videokymography is desribed and the videokymographic images are used to demonstrate vibratory pattern of the vocal folds in vivo in differentvoice registers, at the moment of the chest-falsetto register jump and during the transition from chest register to subharmonic phonation. The effect of abrupt chest-falsetto transition is identified as a nonlinear-dynamic phenomenon inherent to theflow-induced vocal fold oscillations. Finally, the factors potentially important for eliminating the chest-falsetto jump and achieving a smooth register transition are briefly addressed.
