Detection of Improvised Explosives Devices.
Original language description
In this contribution some problems in detection of Improvised Explosives Devices during routine checking of checked in baggage at airports are described. Detection of traces of covert explosives does not have to be reliable and detection of a bulk of explosive with dual energy or CT x-ray systems has a lot of falls alarms. The final decision is often made by operator on the base of absence of a detonator in the x-ray image. However, a ?stealth? detonator invisible in the x-ray image can be constructed.A practical example of such ?stealth? detonator is given. It is pointed out that it is necessary to introduce in practice advanced technologies for detection of bulks of explosives such x-ray diffraction, quadrupole resonance and neutron based methods.
