Is the Cantor-Land Model Valid for the Czech Republic Data?

  • Original language description

The Cantor-Land model represents the fundamental assumptions of the theoretical nature of the relationship between unemployment and (primarily) property crime. The Cantor-Land model differentiates between short-term effects and long-term effects of unemployment on crime. While in the short term a rise in unemployment should lead to a decrease in crime due to the effect of fewer opportunities for criminal activities, in the long term the motivation effect is manifested when unemployment increases the motivation for crime, which is reflected in an actual rise in criminal activity. Our modelled estimates clearly show that application of the Cantor-Land model to data from the Czech Republic can challenge its validity, as none of the models that we estimated confirmed its original assumptions.
