The Threat of CBRN and the Possibilities of Minimising their Biological Effects with a Focus on Radioactive Substances
Original language description
The application of CBRN substances is carried out under strictly defined conditions, the fulfilment of which is monitored and controlled by the relevant regulatory authority. Their use, under these conditions, is entirely justified because the impact on workers and the rest of the population, thanks to strict regulations, is acceptable and, in the case of the Impact of ionising radiation, is comparable to the level of the relevant natural background. From this point of view, using individual CBRN components in practice does not represent any significant problem. But this may not be the case in the event of an accident, breakdown, sabotage or terrorist attack. A special case which should be considered specifically is related to uncontrolled radiation exposure caused by a radiological weapon (“dirty bomb”), which, due to the spread of radioactive contamination into the surrounding environment, can lead to excessive exposure of people near the place of its detonation. It is necessary to be thoroughly prepared for such situations, including adopting appropriate safety. measures, appropriately equipping rescue units with monitoring and effective protective equipment. The report clearly and briefly presents the principles of protection against the effects of individual CBRN agents, while the possibilities of protection against radioactive substances are described in more detail.
