Populism – a Challenge or a Threat to Democracy in Europe?

  • Original language description

Today, populists are in national European governments and part of the European Parliament. The question is whether populists are part of democracy or a threat. Adherents of the first view argue that populism is a pure form of democracy, i.e.direct or populist democracy. The second view stresses that democracy must be understood procedurally, where the principle of limited majority, electoral principles and the devolution of representative power apply, then populism denies democracy and is a threat. A 'new' anti-liberal populism has emerged in the Central European space and poses a threat to the emerging liberal democracies in the post-communist countries. Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán has decided to implement the concept of 'illiberal democracy' and his 'Christian democracy' is to replace liberal democracy. The countries of the Visegrad Group then have different views on the causes of the war in Ukraine and the aid provided, which threatens the continued functioning of this regional Central European grouping within the European Union
