The Effectiveness of Parole in the Czech Republic
Original language description
One of the new measures introduced to the Czech law to cope with the increase of crime was the possibility of adding the supervision by a probation officer to a conditional release order (so-called parole). Statistics indicate, that courts immediately started to use this measure and supervision has since become part of conditional release in nearly quarter of all cases. The key question is the effectiveness of parole. Criminological research most often uses the criterion of recidivism to consider it. The research of the Institute of Criminology and Social Prevention also relied on this factor. It was showed that 40% of all conditionally released persons subjected to the supervision by the probation service in 2003 were reconvinced.
