Mobilizing overseas Chinese to back up chinese diplomacy: The case of President Hu Jintao?s visit to Slovakia in 2009
Original language description
The visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Slovakia in 2009 was unexpectedly disturbed by a violent street clash between patriotic Chinese civilians and Slovak as well as Chinese human rights supporters. The incident revealed China's continuing practices of mobilizing the ideology of nationalism for backing up the Chinese diplomacy and organizing rallies of patriotic overseas Chinese against local protesters in foreign countries. This case study documents the questionable coherence of the Chinese softpower diplomacy. It also indicates the ineffectiveness of Slovak authorities' policy that tolerated Chinese assertiveness in order to upgrade Slovakia's economic agenda with China.
