Between the Hammer and the Anvil: The Impact of the Financial Crisis on the Greek Parliament

  • Original language description

The present chapter examines the impact of the financial crisis on parliamentarism in Greece. In particular, it addresses the following questions: (1) How much did the post-2009 economic crisis affect legitimacy of the Hellenic Parliament? (2) To what extent was the legislative performance of the Hellenic Parliament affected by the crisis? The chapter draws on extensive fieldwork research and a combination of quantitative and qualitative data. The latter include personal interviews with former preisdents of the Hellenic Parliament who are normally difficult to interview for academic purposes. The empirical analysis reveals that the crisis delivered a major blow to parlimentarism in Greece. Public trust toward the parliament and its members declined rapidly, while its legislative function was eroded. A weak and problematic parliament came under pressure from two sides, the citizens and the government, raising concerns about the future of parliamentary democracy in Greece.
