Islamist terrorist organizations active in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), such as al Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) are aware that the MENA region, which contains 60 percent of global oil reserves and 40 percent of global natural gas reserves, plays a vital role in maintaining global energy security at a time when oil represents approximately 37 percent and natural gas approximately 26 percent of global energy consumption. Any disruptions or, worse, stoppages of the supply of oil and gas from this area may have a negative impact on both global energy security and the economic systems of the West...
