Original language description
This chapter focuses on the attitude of the global Salafi-jihadist Islamist terrorist and militant group the Islamic State (IS) with regard to terrorism specifically targeting the energy sector as a political instrument of strategy in North Africa in 2014-2017. In this respect, the chapter has two main goals. The first goal is to analyze the importance that the IS attributes to energy in general and, more specifically, to terrorist attacks targeting the energy industry and infrastructure within its strategy. The second goal is to describe and analyze the forms, examples, goals and motives of terrorist attacks on the energy sector and the accompanying criminal activities conducted by the IS in one specific North Africa country - Libya, and their possible impact on energy security.
