The East is red… again! How the spectres of communism and Russia shape the CEE views of China
Original language description
The seminar focused on the public opinion on China in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries and China's role as a foreign power in the region. In particular, Peter Gries, Professor of Chinese politics at the University of Manchester, discussed the results of a 2020 public opinion survey in six CEE countries and the role of China as a "second eastern power". The communist past of the former Eastern Bloc serves both as a common basis for relations with China and a cautionary tale against future cooperation with a communist superpower.
