After the Kashmir Terror Attack and the May 2025 War: How Europe Can Contribute to Stability in South Asia

  • Original language description

The war between India and Pakistan in May 2025 demonstrated the growing interconnectedness of long-standing border disputes, global warming, geopolitical shifts and the nuclear threat. The recurrent conflicts over the Kashmir issue between the two nuclear-armed countries make it the world’s most dangerous geopolitical flashpoint. The suspension of the Indus Water Treaty by New Delhi is likely to intensify the rivalry, creating new avenues of confrontation between the two countries. The third-party involvement by the United States proves that Washington still has influence over India–Pakistan relations and conflict mediation in the region. Nevertheless, as the US withdraws from the region, the European Union should step in to solve the geopolitical conflict through diplomatic efforts and proactive development policies.
