Drifting Allies, Divided Choices: Central Europe’s Role Amid US–EU Tensions and the Debate Over EU's Strategic Autonomy
Original language description
This Think Visegrad analysis explores the Central Europe’s role amid US–EU tensions. Today, as the U.S. itself is redefining the transatlantic relationship and the process of rearmament in Europe is gaining momentum, the V4 states are being compelled to reassess their approach to the EU's concept of open strategic autonomy. In the light of the above, the region needs to choose one of three baseline options: (1) to bandwagon with the EU institutions and the most avid champions of European strategic autonomy, like France; (2) to continue prioritizing the U.S., while aiming to actively prevent American withdrawal from Europe by means of developing bilateral economic and political ties with the U.S.; (3) to balance European and transatlantic dimensions of the V4 states' policies, so that the region uses one as a leverage towards the other and vice-versa. To examine the consequences of those three baseline alternatives for the V4 states, three scenarios could be developed, in which the trajectories of the U.S. foreign policy and the shape of the transatlantic bond will be roughly modelled.
