Optimisation of high speed milling of hardened tool steel
Original language description
This paper presents an experimental investigation of high speed milling (HSM) of hardened tool steel. The experiments were performed with hardened ČSN 19552, equivalent to DIN 1.2343 tool steel (~ 58 HRC) using indexable insert toroidal cutter employingcoated carbide tool. The effect of different process parameters on the tool performance and cutting forces induced was investigated. The cutting parameters involved were; cutting speeds in the range of 100 to 400 m/min, feed variation from 0,03 to 0,15 mm/tooth, axial depth of cut from 0,2 to 1 mm, and radial depth of cut of 2 and 4 mm. Tool life was ended when flank wear reached 0,3 mm or gross chipping occurred. The optimum cutting conditions have been specified based on the modes of tool failure, tool life and cutting forces induced.
