Thermomechanical Simulation of the Service Load Transients of Hot Forging Tools
Original language description
The evaluation of thermomechanical material response under industrial service conditions is crucial in the development of resource-efficient hot-working tools. In contrast to forming experiments, thermomechanical simulators (TMSs) enable precise controland monitoring of a wide range of application-relevant loading conditions. TMSs in the literature, however, have not attained the thermomechanical load transients measured on hot forging die surfaces. This paper presents a survey of previous TMSs and relevant service conditions and introduces a new TMS that attains the industrial forging load transients. Average heating and cooling speeds of 400 and 700 °C/s, respectively, between 185 and 650 °C were obtained in thermal-spray-coated tool steel samples throughout a volume of 22 x 10 x 6 mm.
