Effects of Chemical Composition on Microstructure Evolution in Semi-Solid Processing

  • Original language description

Mini-thixoforming is a new method of processing metals in their freezing range region. The small feedstock volume used in this method allows rapid heating and solidification to be achieved with high accuracy. Mini-thixoforming can be employed for materials with a very narrow freezing range which, until now, were impossible to thixoform using the conventional routes. This method thus promises opportunities for obtaining novel types of microstructures. The evolution of microstructure during thixoforming is governed by the processing conditions and by the chemical composition of the feedstock. The impact of some elements, such as vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten and cobalt on semi-solid processing has not been adequately clarified or described yet. Therefore, the present experiment aims to ascertain the effect of these elements on semi-solid processing. Four high-alloyed steels were chosen as experimental materials for semi-solid forming trials. After the appropriate semi-solid processing parameters were found, the required die cavity filling and the surface quality of demonstration products were achieved. The resulting microstructures were examined using metallographic techniques. The effects of individual elements on the final microstructure were evaluated.
