    Vacuum technology for woodchips drying

  • Original language description

Production and processing of biomass operates with materialswithmany structures and qualities. Basic identification of mechanical properties is defined by structure and humidity. This article focuses on wooden biomass, especially on woodchips. Properties of wooden chips depend on thekind of wood, shape of the chips and humidity. All technological applications of woodchips deal with the humidity of the input material. Pelleting, briquetting and also combustion of wooden chips solves problems of high humidity of the input material. Drying of wooden biomass is a significantly expensive process. This paperpresents a solution which was invented through thecooperation of the University and the research activities of private companies. Reduction of drying costs motivates the research of vacuum drying technology. Vacuum drying technology is a commonly used process in the production of timber goods. The commonly used technology is not suitable for drying wooden chips. Energetic behaviour, processing method and drying speeds make wood-chip drying and timber-goods drying verydifferent. New vacuum technology operates with a large amount of input heat, constant under-pressure in the workspace and high recuperation of input heat. Thetechnology developed here is tested on a prototype vacuum dryer. Thedevice provides wood chips for a briquetting machine. It is a newly-developed, tested technology with a high level of potential. The paper describes the invented technology, the vacuum potential and opportunities of vacuum technology. © 2017, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies. All rights reserved.
