Prediction of voltage dips in an electric power system

  • Original language description

Voltage dips (sags), mainly caused by remote short circuits, are generally considered the serious power quality problem. Their effect on an operation of sensitive equipment is the same like the effect of short supply interruptions. The knowledge about occurrence of a voltage dips in a network as a function of their magnitude and duration can be obtained through the use of power quality monitors or by means of prediction methods. This paper compares advantages and disadvantages of the voltage dips monitoring and the prediction methods, and limitations of their practical using for the prediction of the number of voltage dips in the power system. The principles of two prediction methods (the method of fault positions and the method of critical distances)are mentioned. The method of fault positions is applied to the real 110 kV grid. The accuracy of the prediction method is evaluated on the basis of the comparison with the outcome of the voltage dip monitoring.
