The paper is aimed at the mathematical and computer modelling of the induction heating and consequent cooling and hardening of a ferromagnetic cylinder in various cooling media. The mathematical model of the heating consists of two non-linear second-order partial differential equations of the parabolic type for distribution of the electromagnetic and thermal fields while the process of hardening is described by a theoretically-empirical algorithm providing the field of hardness The first one representsthe computation of the temperature distribution of the heated cylinder before hardening (that may generally be non-uniform). All material parameters are functions of the temperature. The second step is an intensive cooling of material in various media with different temperature dependencies of the coefficient of the convec-tive heat transfer and determination of the hardness.The goal is to find the medium that provides the optimum dis-tribution of the field of hardness.
