Příspěvek popisuje přínos aplikace normy IEC 61850 v nových generacích elektrických ochran. Norma IEC byla vytvořena jako mezinárodní standardizovaný komunikační protokol používaný v chránění, monitoring, měření a kontrolu. Dále je poukázáno na potřeby dalších generací komunikačních systémů. V tomto příspěvku je uveden celkový pohled na implementaci normy IEC 61850 pro chránění a automatizaci.
