Wind Gust Mapping in Wind Energy Development
Original language description
Before erecting a single wind turbine, several studies are required to suggest the best location for placing wind turbines. As the measurements of wind conditions are essential for several types of studies, this paper is focused on wind maps, particularly on the mapping of wind gusts and connected tools. The project was carried out at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen in cooperation with the National Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) in Pilsen. The main aim of the project was to obtain wind speed maps showing the predicted mean wind speed in the Czech Republic with the probability of the impact of wind gust with return period of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 75 and 100 years. Those maps can provide guidance in determining the wind resource areas, consequently an annual energy outcome; and potential risk of wind extreme conditions, which might have a negative impact on wind energy development.
