Concerns over increasing request for energies, resource energy scarcity, growing pollution and global climate changes make the photovoltaic (PV) one of the most important technology in the 21st century. Unfortunately, contemporaneous technology based onthe crystalline silicon (c-Si) has some disadvantages. As a result, the research in this sphere is progressing on finding of an alternative material in effort to improve PV cells performances, decrease production intensity, reduce silicon consumption andcost. The thin films offer very promising alternative to the c-Si. These materials form the basis of the 2nd and 3rd PV generation. This paper deals with one concept of the 3rd generation - with the tandem cells. In the first part of paper there are mentioned principle and structure of these cells among others.
