Grid frequency regulation by recycling electrical energy in flywheels

  • Original language description

Grid frequency regulation function is based on the fact that the amount of power generated and the amount of power consumed must be in exact balance at all times. The system operator usually generates a signal which is called, Area Control Error (ACE), based on the difference between these two parameters. The expected goal is to keep the system near nominal frequency value. Traditionally, frequency regulation is managed by varying the output of power stations connected to the electric grid. The article presents a method in which electric energy, which is necessary for power balance keeping, is recycled, in the system. First, the system absorbs energy when it is in abundance, then discharges the same for the desired frequency regulation effect. The method is based on kinetic energy storage technology in high-speed flywheels (FES). The modeling results, hased on actual ACE signals, should, indicate that a modular flywheel system can be effective in providing frequency regulation in power grids.
