Case Study of BESS Capability for Low-Frequency Power Oscillations Active Compensation

  • Original language description

This paper explores the problem of low-frequency power oscillations (LFO), which has been largely monitored by the deployment of wide-area measurement systems (WAMS). Specifically, there is investigated the potential in the use of a battery energy storage system (BESS) for inter-area LFO active compensation. This can have benefits in grid stability, control, fault immunity, or energy loss reduction. For the applicability evaluation, a simple model of the measured LFO and BESS interaction is developed and a suitable control algorithm for the BESS is proposed. Key challenges for future research regarding LFO compensation are identified in the process. In conclusion, the case study simulation results are discussed and the benefits of the proposed LFO compensation system are evaluated regarding possible alternative solutions.
