The Legal System in the USA
Original language description
The text presents the most important facts relating to the legal system of the USA. It informs about the origin of the American Constitution towards the end of 18th century, its significance for American history and its present position. Basic information is provided about legislative and executive powers and about the institutions which may exercise them. The main part of the text concentrates on judicial power and its relationship towards executive and legislative branches. The article introduces primary sources of American law and its basic classification. There are some important legal concepts taken over from the English tradition of common (case) law and the explanation is provided about them because the legal system of the USA is based on the same tradition. The text also presents an overview of the court system. The facts are given about the courts both at the federal level and the level of individual states, about their powers, jurisdictions and possible decisions.
