China's Agriculture, Industry and Transport during the Turbulent Years (1912-1949)
Original language description
China's economy went through difficult and complicated phase during the turbulent years 1912-1949. Fall of empire and the following instability had a negative impact on further development of all economic sectors. The Chinese agriculture, evidently the most important part of national economy, was underdeveloped and its slow modernization hindered general economic growth. Likewise, China's total industrial output was far below the level of the most developed countries and the Chinese society naturally did not resemble to the western industrial societies. During the period between the fall of empire and the establishment of Communist regime, railways showed to be the fastest growing part of the Chinese transport. Both construction and functioning of railways were however strongly influenced by military, political and other non-economic factors.
