The Search for Antediluvian Astronomy: Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Astronomers' Conceptions of the Origins of Science
Original language description
In his Jewish Antiquities, the Jewish historian Josephus Flavius relates a story of an advanced astronomy pursued by biblical patriarchs before the Flood. In the early modern period, Flavius?s story was often used as a clarification of the origin of astronomy. The aim of the article is to describe the gradual change in the approach of astronomers and historians of mathematical sciences to this account in the course of the 16th and 17th century. This change did not consist in a simple shift from the belief in the perfect antediluvian astronomy to the theory of progress. In fact, the belief in the existence of antediluvian astronomy survived until the end of the 17th century. A much more serious and substantial change consisted in the fact that God was no longer considered the originator of astronomy, since it started to be understood as a result of human cleverness, patience and diligence.
