    A Testimony about Ontological Metaphor and the Expression of Problematic Meaning: Jan Patočka on the Relation between Myth and Literature

    The article considers the ideas of the Czech phenomenologist Jan Patočka, in particular his views on the relationship between myth and literature. Patočka states that the 'collective and pre-given' truth of myth consists in the expression of the difference between the 'the human lot' and the 'divine lot'. Myth states that the limits between mortals and immortals cannot be crossed. The 'day' of human life is circumscribed by the 'night' of human death; in this night, however, the divine powers gain ground. Patočka argues that this mythical truth is expressed in ancient verse and drama. However, Patočka also shows that people guided by myth are unable to recognize Being in night of death and the whole of beings in the day of life. These people thus comprehend life in the "ontological metaphor"; they are unable to distinguish beings and Being. This mythical "mixture" suggests the language of poetical metaphors, however, it is not conscious as a mixture, it is not "thematic". The emergence
