On the Sphere of Anaximander
Original language description
Diogenes Laertius ascribed to Anaximander of Miletus the 'fashioning of a sphere'. This could be taken to mean an earth globe, a spherical model of the skies, or an armillary sphere. But since Anaximander in his cosmology envisioned the Earth as cylindrical in shape, the universe was in his view probably not spherical at all. Given that a model of the universe could lead to the changes in our understanding of his entire conception of cosmology, a sphere may be perhaps rather taken to represent a drawingof the universe or, in analogy with a map of the world, a map of the universe. A 'ground plan' of the universe may help to explain some of the problematic points in the Anaximander's conception of cosmology.
