Taphonomy of cremation burials: excavation and deposition bias in bone preservation

  • Original language description

Burnt bones from prehistoric cremation burials are usually under-represented, fragmentary and susceptible to mishandling by excavators. On a sample of eight cremation burials dating from the 2nd century AD (Roman period) from the Jevíčko-Předměstí site we applied specific laboratory techniques (CT scan, preparation, cleaning) and tested the influence of deposition type (urn, pit) on the preservation of burnt bones. We found out that burials prepared by micro-excavation were significantly better preserved than those which were sieved. Type of deposition wasn't significant effect for worse preservation. CT scan revealed bone dislocations far beyond burial boundaries as well as new structures in the form of unpreserved "organic" urns. We recommend to establish a new standard in laboratory techniques using detailed en block micro-excavation to enhance spatial data investigation. Since cremations represent dominant rite in many prehistoric periods, it is necessary to pay more attention to t
