Czech Art Historian Vojtěch (Adalbert) Birnbaum - an Ideological Opponent of Josef Strzygowski
Original language description
The Czech art historian Adalbert Birnbaum (1877 - 1934) became famous as a leading expert in history of mediaeval architecture and conservation of cultural heritage. However, the beginnings of his research career are associated with the Vienna School of Art History and with reassessment of the Roman art and the art of late antiquity, which was usually seen as a period of decline. Birnbaum´s contribution to the Orient-oder-Rom controversy was standing outside attention of Czech art historians for a long time. Its comprehensive evaluation can be even small, but very useful part of a puzzle, of an overall picture which shows the importance of Strzygowski´s work in all aspects of historiography of art history.
