A Powerful Antidote, a Strange Camel and Turkish Pepper: Iberian Science, Discovery of the New World and Early Modern Czech Lands

  • Original language description

This paper analyses the reception of knowledge about the New World nature, and more specifically, the reception of Iberian scientific knowledge of American nature, in the early modern Czech lands. It has been shown how the process of the reception of information about New World's nature differes among the town-dwelling classes, the intellectuals and the nobility (the attention is paid to the herbals, cosmographical works and travel reports). On the one hand, the study reveals the efforts of Central European intellectuals to interpret the New World's nature as limited by the lack of necessary data and experience, which led to some misinterpretations and simplifications. On the other hand, it shows the Central European scholars as a full-fledged part of the information network, whose works have the same characteristics as Iberian and, in general, modern European science.
