Original language description
Shakespeare has always attracted a great number of renowned and expert translators. Similarly, the history of Czech Shakespeare translation has been a long one. As in other central, eastern, and southern European nations, such translation was initially connected with national revivals and a search for political and cultural independence from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. This paper examines Shakespeare translation in Bohemia and its reception at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the light of drama translation theories and concepts.
