Original language description

The paper point out the relevance of the study of leisure patterns to our understanding of Czech society and its history. It maps the changes in Czech society through the prism of changing leisure patterns. Two kinds of leisure activities are addresses specifically. Firstly, the organization of non-competitive sporting activities is analyzed as a phenomenon that helps us to understand the wider social processes in Czech society. Secondly, the history and development of distinctive features of leisure patterns activity in Czechoslovakia, and later in the Czech Republic – the so called “chatareni” is described. The paper highlights the relevance of the analysis of the different ways people relate to their free time and the variation in their leisure activities for our understanding of the social changes that Czech society has gone through.
