The Stability of the Earth in Anaximander’s Universe
Original language description
According to Aristotle, Anaximander of Miletus explained that the Earth maintains its position in the universe by reference to symmetry. Simplicius added that the Earth was supported by air. Given the importance of air in Anaximander’s cosmology, one could suppose that Simplicius is correct. Moreover, we can assume that Aristotle based his report on a misinterpretation of accounts describing Anaximander’s symmetric universe of the heavenly bodies passing under the Earth.
