Waste and Value in the Post-Socialist Space

  • Original language description

Since 1989 post-socialist sphere has passed through significant changes that shaped handling unwanted things. In this paper, I explore human-waste interactions in the countryside of West Bohemia (Czech Republic) to shed light on the nature of value. In order to understand the relationship between humans and waste I take advantage of ethnography and garbology, analysis of household waste. I argue that value emerges through the relationship to action and materiality mediated by language. The presence of absence also plays a key role considering the value of the unwanted since certain things are never discarded. Instead of being thrown into bins they are considered non-fungible and kept as a memory of the past, circulate among neighbours, undergo renovation, and become part of official recycling process. Through the interconnection of action, things and language I aspire to reveal construction of value on the background of tension between market and non-monetized models where the aspect of morality, sustainability and responsibility influences individual´s decision relating dealing unwanted things.
