Retouchers from mammoth tusks in Middle Palaeolithic. Case study from Kůlna Cave layer 7a1 (Czech republic)
Original language description
Existence of retouchers of hard animal tissues in Middle Palaeolithic layers was identified in the early 20th 14 century, but only in the recent years researchers have been paying more attention to this phenomenon. Overwhelming majority of retouchers are either fragments of bones without shape modifications. In the collection of these ad hoc tools from the Micoquian layer 7a1 in the Kůlna Cave (Czech Republic) we even identified two retouchers of mammoth ivory. So far the use of this material for retouchers remains unique in the Middle Palaeolithic of Europe. Diachronic comparison of Taubachian and Micoquian assemblages of hard animal tissues with anthropic impact suggests that the utilisation of mammoth ivory in Micoquian 21 was not just a random phenomenon, but it was probably related with the overall change in 22 Neanderthal behaviour towards mammoths as source of raw materials.
