Islamophobia on Facebook: The Current “Migration Crisis” and the Songs of the Czech Singers Critical of Islam, Muslims and Refugees

  • Original language description

The text is focused on the Czech singers singing songs critical of the “migration crisis”, by Islam or Muslim immigrants which appeared between 2015 and 2017, and further, on the related activities of these singers on Facebook. The major goal is to introduce texts of songs which became viral on Youtube (i.e. have reached from 8 to over 500 thousand viewers) and analyse how these singers imagine the contemporary “migration crisis” and related terms “Islam” and “Muslim immigration”. Theoretically, the article is framed by two concepts – the celebritization of politics, and post-truth politics. In conclusion, due to the analysis provided, one song was excluded from the group of songs critical of Islam since it was rather directed – though not sensitively – at the smallness of the Czech nation. The remaining four texts of the songs analysed here were identified with a critical attitude towards different aspects of the “migration crisis”, although these texts significantly varied, such as the one which mostly emphasized the image of huge crowds coming here, while the others stressed either the threat of future Islamification of our society or the necessity of mobilization at a European level or, finally, one song portraying an Arab from Syria as a dangerous woman chaser.
