Foreign-Policy Activities of China in the Middle East: Establishing Energy Security or Being A Responsible Emerging Power?

  • Original language description

The strategic map of the Middle East is slowly changing with traditional powers retreating partially from the management of regional policy and with the expanding power vacuum in the region. Lately, growing attention is focused on emerging powers such as China that have capabilities and the potential to increase their engagement in regional policy and conflict management and fill this vacuum. However, the question is if China as the most powerful of the contemporary emerging powers and an important trade and energy partner of many Mid-East countries is willing and capable to take on the role of an extra-regional leader that will stabilize the regional order. This article explains interests and motivations behind current Chinaʼs Mid-East policy and shows that although China increases their presence in the region, they are not yet ready to become a major force in shaping regional politics.
