From Donetsk to Tel Aviv: Czech Antisemitic Movements Respond to the Russian-Ukrainian War
Original language description
In an attempt to document concrete examples of „anti-Zionism as an invitation to antisemitism“, my chapter examines the incidents of „anti-Zionism“ in the rhetoric of both pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian antisemitic movements in the Czech Republic. Divided in their loyalties between the fascination by imperial achievements of Vladimir Putin and the personal relationships to their comrades from Ukrainian Right Sector, the Czech antisemitic movements can agree on one thing only: that whatever is happening between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and „Zionism“ are to be blamed for it. As such, the chapter provides a case study of how does antisemitism, disguised as „anti-Zionism“ enter the reflections of an important event, despite the fact that the event itself is totally unrelated to the issues of Zionism and/or Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This is done by analyzing the primary sources in Czech and Slovak (Russian and Ukraninian, if needed to check the source material). Together with the analysis of textual material, the chapter includes findings from the field observation of the rallies of antisemitic groups in the Czech Republic, related to the war in Ukraine. My methods include social networks analysis (SNA) of the Czech antisemitic cyberspace with methods of content analysis and Media Studies, applied to the Czech websites that can be identified as antisemitic and most influential in the network according to the SNA. The study is divided into three parts – 1. general overview of the Czech antisemitic scene, 2. history of its relations to Ukraine and Russia and how it has been influenced by the contemporary conflict, 3. examples of contemporary rhetoric, including selected urban legends and conspiracy theories that are popular among the adherents of the scene.
