Jews and Muslims in the Czech Republic – Demography, Communal Institutions, Mutual Relations
Original language description
It is not easy to be Jewish, as the old saying goes, and it is certainly not easy being a Muslim these days. Until now, the Czech Republic seems to have been protected from both the eruptions of antisemitism we are currently witnessing in Western Europe and the violent jihadist extremism that has engulfed Muslim society. Yet, both the Jewish and Muslim communities in the Czech Republic are facing several serious challenges, most of which do not seem to be directly connected to the contemporary crises. Some of these challenges bring them closer together than even the two communities would be ready to admit, others place them on opposite sides of the barricade. This chapter sets out to provide a basic introduction to the situation of the Czech Muslim and Jewish communities, their demography, some of the challenges they face and the mutual relations they experience, if any.
