Original language description
Michal Slavata (c. 1554-post-1575/1577), a name that we are familiar with from the passages of Sidneyʼs correspondence. There, Slavata acquired a rather dubious reputation – especially due to him borrowing money from Sidney and his reluctant attitude to repayment, the reason why Hubert Languet got himself involved in negotiations and was insulted by Slavata. In contrast to such an unfavourable image, this paper intends to introduce Slavata as a full-blown member of a noble Czech family connected to Utraquist Protestantism. Moreover, as the rector of Wittenberg University in 1572, he had given an excellent speech about the Hussite movement, which was later included in Joachim Camerariusʼ Historica narratio de fratrum orthodoxorum ecclesiis in Bohemia, Moravia et Polonia. As shown by his wish to contribute to the printing costs as well as his letter to Camerarius brothers from the 1st of May 1578, Philip Sidney was acquainted with the treatise.
