Cold War on Ice? Soviet Ice-Hockey Dominance and Foreign Policy
Original language description
In this article we argue, that the ‘Cold War on ice’ narrative, which was (and still is) very common in the USSR and the Eastern Bloc is misleading, and we suspect that international ice-hockey in fact didn’t serve as a useful ideological weapon towards the Cold War opponents. While the narrative contains inherent foreign policy dimension (well explored on the case of ice-hockey by for example Soares, 2013, 2018), we argue that Soviet ice-hockey successes had only limited potential to serve as a tool of Soviet soft power vis-a-vis American audience.
