Human ecology behind bars: Narrative change within the Czech prison system

  • Original language description

Is the human ecology approach a way to change penitentiary care? What are benefits of animal programmes and in which forms are these implemented? This presentation describes animal programmes in Czech prisons as a changing approach to inmates and their treatment in the context of the Czech prison system. The authors will present a new project entitled “Paw in the Hand” that was realised in the open prison Jiřice, and will discuss changing roles of dogs behind bars.Based on own ethnographic research, the authors will discuss how “prison dogs” changed the social climate of prison and improved inmate-staff interactions. Dogs in Czech prisons are connected with “love and pain”. Love, because they are raised and loved during they stay in prison. Pain, because dogs are traditionally used as a part of repression. In the “Paw in the Hand” project there is also a moment of separation between the inmates and the dogs. What can this love and pain experience bring to inmates, staff, dogs or society? Animal programmes seem to be an effective way how to change prison practice and strengthen desistance.
