Austrian Activities in Shipping at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century: The Shipping Company Austro-Americana
Original language description
Traditionally, the Habsburg Monarchy focused its interests on its merchant navy, and although it was mainly a landlocked country, it endeavoured to build up routes to large ports in Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America. Austro-Americana was able to establish itself fairly quickly in the carriage of emigrants to the USA, and thus was able to compete with foreign shipping companies operating within the monarchy. The war and breakdown Habsburg Monarchy, alongside the end of transatlantic services from Trieste, resulted in the end of Austrian involvement in overseas shipping transport.
