Through Fire and Time: Cremation Practices in Roman and Early Medieval Periods at Gbely-Kojatín (Slovakia) and Přítluky (Czech Republic)

  • Original language description

Cremation became the dominant funerary practice in the Middle Danube region during the Roman Period (RP) (1st–4th century) and reappeared in the Early Medieval Period (EMA) (6th/7th–8th century). Our study aims to reconstruct differences in cremation technology from Gbely-Kojatín site (Slovakia, Roman Period) and Přítluky site (Czech Republic, Early Middle Age) through FTIR-ATR and carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of cremated remains. The results indicate that Gbely-Kojatín (RP) had higher heat intensities and controlled practices, Přítluky had lower heat intensities with the greatest variability.
