Lecture at an international conference: The Stoic Theory of Blending

  • Original language description

In the conference paper, I focused on the Stoic theory of blending (krasis di' holou), a type of mixture often criticized by ancient commentators and interpreted metaphorically by many modern scholars. The main objection to krasis is that it requires something physically impossible - two (or more) bodies occupying the same portion of space simultaneously (colocation). While setting aside whether the Stoics endorsed the colocation of two or more bodies, I examined whether colocation is possible within Stoic physics. I argued that the Stoic view of bodies as infinitely divisible and not absolutely full but rather varying in density and rarity makes colocation, and thus the theory of blending, possible. Blending is not only a coherent part of Stoic natural philosophy but a necessary notion which the Stoics used to explain phenomena such as pneuma or the relation between body and soul.Název akce18th London Ancient Science Conference 2025Místo konáníLondon, GBDatum zahájení02.04.2025Datum ukončení04.04.2025Organizátor konferenceUniversity College London
