The transformation of this village of medieval origininto a town is linked to the founding of a glassworksby Andreas Ziegler in 1897, which becameone of the largest manufacturers of sheet and mirrorglass in Austria-Hungary, employing 900 people.The factory was closed in 1934 due to the economiccrisis (https://www.mestoholysov.cz/zieglerova-sklarna). After the annexation of the Sudetenlandby Nazi Germany in 1938, the abandoned factorywas purchased by the newly founded MetallwerkeHolleischen GmbH, which became involved in theThird Reich’s arms production. e old factory inthe town, known as Werk I, manufactured cartridgesand components for aircraft, anti-aircraft cannons,and machine guns. A second section of the plant,known as Werk II, was built in the forest outside thetown, where ammunition for these weapons was assembled[Adam 2016, 228; Fig. 1:A-B].Due to a labour shortage, forced labourers weresoon put to work in the factory. A total of ve campswere set up in the city to house the workforce duringthe war: the DAF (Deutsche Arbeitstsfront) camp forworkers brought from all parts of occupied Europe,the RAD (Reichsarbeitsdienst der weiblichen Jugend) camp for German girls, the camp for Czech femaleforced labourers (Tschechisches Frauenlager) andtwo camps for prisoners of war (primarily Frenchand Italian POWs). In total, more than 6,000 workerswere employed in the factory, most of whomwere forced and unfree labourers (Fig. 1:5–7)
