  • Original language description

This article deals with the influence of translation on contemporary Irish poetry through an examination of the works of P. Muldoon, Derek Mahon, Michael Longley and Peter Sirr. It takes its theoretical approach from the work of J. Derrida in his book LeMonolingualisme de l'autre: ou la proth?se d'origine, which brings into doubt the idea of an original language, or mother tongue. Irish poetry for nearly two centuries was nationalist in its dimensions, and Derrida's work provides a new framework for evaluation of this literature.
