    This article argues that W. H. Auden's fame was not merely a consequence of the poetry he wrote, but also, during the Cold War, affected the poetry he wrote. It places him within the political context of the US reading his poems especially from the period 1945-1950.This article argues that Auden's eminence in the late 1940s played an integral role in his poetry, especially, when viewed in the political context of the incipient Cold War. Even a small poem like 'In Schrafft's' freights larger issues involving polemics about the relations between culture and politics from 1948 to 1960. Comparison with Edwin Rolfe, a poet on the other end of the spectrum of renown from Auden, allows us to gauge the tone and treatment of themes in some of the poems of Nones. I then argue that Auden accrued prestige by his increasing proximity to the idiom of essays and reviews in what Randall Jarrell called the 'age of criticism' - this precipitated many different formal developments, not least in long sequ
